Kybella® is the first FDA-approved injectable medication for the treatment of a double chin. Kybella® is helpful for patients with moderate to severe submental fullness caused by a significant collection of large fat cells below the chin.
Kybella® is a powerful tool to address submental fat below the chin area and should only be administered by medical professionals trained and experienced in its specific use. When performed skillfully, it can be an effective solution for people who are good candidates and desire a contoured profile.
How Kybella® Works
The active ingredient in Kybella® is deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring chemical found in bile that dissolves dietary fat in the body. Naturally occurring deoxycholic acid breaks down dietary fat in the body.
Similarly, the deoxycholic acid formulation in Kybella® triggers cytolysis, a process that involves the destruction of cellular membranes. When fat cells lose their cohesive integrity, they release their contents, which are then processed by the body and eliminated.
The process results in inflammation which then helps in re-draping of the submental skin and resolves the problem of any potential laxity that could create a sagging turkey neck.
However, deoxycholic acid works on a variety of cells. Therefore, it must be administered very carefully into the targeted fat cells beneath the chin.
Dr. Greco has a thorough understanding of the face from both an aesthetic and functional perspective. He is double board certified and possesses extensive medical knowledge that he uses to envision how changes to one area will impact other features of the face. This allows him to tailor your treatment to yield the best results while minimizing risk.
Ideal Candidates for Kybella®
It is important to note that Kybella® is not a weight-loss procedure. Ideally, patients considering Kybella® treatment should not have excess fat under the chin that can be reduced with weight loss. They should be seeking treatment only for re-contouring purposes.
The fat targeted by Kybella® is often referred to as “stubborn” or "diet-resistant" fat because it can remain in the under-chin area even after you shed pounds from elsewhere by exercising and eating healthy foods.
This is because dieting shrinks fat cells but does not remove them from the body. Sometimes, these smaller cells can grow large again, creating a new bulge.
The entire procedure takes 15 to 20 minutes and is performed in our office with local anesthesia to provide optimal comfort. A single session may involve 25 to 50 injections in the treatment area below the chin, all placed with precision by Dr. Greco to ensure maximum patient safety and results.
Patients may experience some bruising and swelling after their Kybella® procedure, but this can be controlled with ice packs. Other potential side effects include discomfort or numbness at the injection site.
During your consultation, Dr. Greco will discuss what to expect in the days after your treatment session, explaining normal reactions, the anticipated number of total treatments to achieve a specific outcome, and the expected timeframe for results.
Fat destruction, and the process of its subsequent removal, can take weeks or months, depending on your desired look. It usually takes two to four Kybella® treatments, spaced about a month apart, to achieve the full reduction.
Results are usually permanent. However, as with any fat-reduction procedure, slimmer contours are best maintained by avoiding new weight gain after successful treatment. Therefore, patients seeking Kybella® treatment should be at or near their ideal weight and able to maintain that weight steadily into the future.
Is Kybella® Safe?
When administered by a trained and experienced medical professional, Kybella® is a safe and effective treatment for eliminating double chins.
Kybella injectable has undergone numerous successful global clinical studies and trials. More than 1,600 people participated in more than 20 studies during a worldwide clinical development program designed to investigate the injectable and its application.
Dr. Greco only uses the official product made by Allergan, the trusted maker of other popular and commonly-used aesthetic injections, such as Botox® and Juvéderm®. As a manufacturer, Allergan applies rigorous safety standards and controls to its products to ensure they are safe.
