Lip augmentation or enhancement can create fuller, plumper lips to give you a more youthful appearance. As the lip ages, the pink portion begins to recede, and the lip becomes thinner. Lip augmentation helps increase the vertical height and volume of the lips.
Patients may choose to have either the upper lip or the lower lip enhanced, and in most cases, choose both. Lip augmentation may be performed using minimally invasive injectables to the lip (Hyaluronic Acid fillers) or cosmetic surgical lip augmentation (structural fat grafting).
The desire for permanent, natural-looking, fuller lips can be achieved via surgical lip augmentation. Surgical methods offer a more long-term solution for lip augmentation. Surgical lip augmentation can be performed using implants or grafts from the patient’s body.
A patient’s own fat can be harvested from an area with an excess, such as the abdomen or thighs, and then implanted carefully into the delicate lip area. The graft is implanted in tiny droplets to add volume and reshape or smooth away fine lines of the lips.
The procedure is usually performed under twilight anesthesia. Results are usually immediately visible but initially have an “overdone” look. This occurs in part because of post-surgical bruising or swelling.
Once the swelling has resolved and the injected fat has settled into place, patients are typically delighted with their lip augmentation results.
An alternative option for surgical lip augmentation is to use SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) implants. This involves the delicate placement of contoured tissue obtained during a facelift. The tissue is placed in the lips through small incisions made at the corners of the mouth (oral commissures).
