Planning for Rhinoplasty Surgery

Before your surgery, it is preferable to plan for your rhinoplasty experience and talk to your surgeon in detail about your needs and expectations. Your face is the first representative of your identity, and your nose is the central focal point of the face.

Dr. Greco is Philadelphia’s foremost expert in rhinoplasty. He is single-minded in his focus on helping patients achieve the aesthetic improvements they desire. Dr. Greco takes special care to determine what the needs of his patients are in order to create individualized surgical plans for the best outcome.

Pre-operative Rhinoplasty Consultation

Before your rhinoplasty surgery, you will have a preoperative meeting with Dr. Greco, where he will examine the internal and external structure of your nose. This helps identify both aesthetic and functional concerns that can be addressed during surgery.

You will also provide your medical history to aid in preventing medical complications during surgery.

Questions you may be asked include information about:

  • Medical conditions or drug allergies that may have been diagnosed previously.
  • Types of recent surgeries or medical treatments you have undergone.
  • List of medications (including vitamins and herbal supplements) you take.
  • Your history with recreational drugs, alcohol, and smoking.

Be sure to share your full medical history. This will help ensure the best outcome and safe surgery.

Aesthetic value and beauty are subjective. It is, therefore, important to discuss your desires in detail. This will give a clear understanding of the surgical process and the expected results. Use the pre-operative consultation to clarify doubts and communicate your expectations from the surgery during your personal, in-depth consultation with Dr. Greco. Remember, the goal of rhinoplasty is to bring the nose into balance with the rest of the face.

Dr. Greco or his staff will take photographs during the consultation for pre-operative analysis and planning, as well digital imaging.

An important and exciting aspect of the consultation process is the digital imaging of the patient's photographs. This is a unique opportunity for the patient to both participate, and get a sense of their potential post-operative results.

A pre-operative appointment will be scheduled once your surgery date is confirmed. During this visit, you will be informed about post-operative care after surgery. This is an ideal time for clarifying any concerns, planning for the day of surgery, and considering aftercare options.

Smoking before Rhinoplasty

It is strongly recommended that patients stop smoking several weeks before and after their rhinoplasty surgery. If you need assistance with stopping smoking, work with your primary care physician to access smoking cessation resources.

Length of Surgery and Recovery after Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty surgery is one of the most complex facial plastic procedures and can take several hours. The exact length of the surgery depends on the needs of each patient and the complexity of the surgery.

Although complete recovery can be slow, most patients return to normal activities in about two weeks. In fact, our rhinoplasty patients are sent home on the day of surgery with a taped splint over the nose. In most cases, our patients can resume exercise activities within two weeks.

During this time, medication may be prescribed to help ease any discomfort you may feel post-surgery. Patients are instructed to apply cold compresses to the nose intermittently for three days. Any minor bruising may be disguised with makeup.

Expected Rhinoplasty Results

Patients may notice some swelling around the nose and eyes immediately after surgery. About 80% of initial swelling typically resolves in two weeks, with another ten percent resolving over two months.

Patients will gradually see their new refined nose take shape as the swelling goes down over time.
