What treatment option is best to achieve facial symmetry for you is based on the type of change needed for your face.
While beauty treatments are often focused on enhancing the skin and individual features, overall facial harmony is also vital. Faces that are symmetrical are usually considered more attractive.
Dr. Timothy Greco is a double-board-certified facial plastic surgeon. He uses facial implants, fat grafting, fillers, or BOTOX® treatment to correct asymmetries and help patients achieve a more balanced appearance.
Facial Symmetry
A perfectly symmetrical face would have identical left and right sides. If you were to draw a line down the center, both sides would match exactly.
However, most people have faces where their left and right sides are considered siblings rather than identical twins. While most faces appear to have a symmetric shape, everyone has some mild asymmetry in the features.
This can include a slightly crooked nose, one eye that looks different from the other, or a misaligned chin. Genetics, aging, injury, and dental work are all common causes of asymmetry.
Facial Implants Treatment
Facial implants can be a good option if you’re looking for a long-term solution for asymmetry caused by your natural bone structure. Concerns such as a weak or recessed chin can be improved with facial implants.
This is a surgical procedure that uses a silicone implant and can provide lasting results. Fat grafting, which uses fat extracted from elsewhere in your body, also addresses asymmetry on the face and results in a fuller, more natural look.
Soft Tissue Filler Treatment
Having a v-shaped face with high, rounded cheekbones, a slim jawline, and a defined chin creates a more youthful facial profile and is a common beauty goal. However, age can change these contours, making them more rounded.
Soft gel dermal fillers can improve contours that have changed over time. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers like JUVÉDERM® Voluma improve facial structure by lifting and volumizing the cheeks, making the jawline look sharper.
JUVÉDERM® Ultra, another HA filler, plumps lips that are too small for the face due to genetics, aging, or both. Additionally, these fillers can be used to add volume to hollowed temples and to fix stretched earlobes. You can also straighten, refine, or thin the nose or elevate the nasal tip with fillers.
BOTOX® Treatment
Neuromodulators, such as Botox®, relax active muscles in select areas of the face. They can be used to
- Make eyebrows even
- Slim only one side of an enlarged jaw to match the other
- Correct wrinkles more prominent on one side of the face
Injectable treatment sessions are quick, with minimal side effects and recovery time. However, the results are temporary, and maintenance treatments will be needed to ensure a consistent look.
